Bethesda ditches its lackluster dining reputation with these hot new restaurants


Lately it looks like Bethesda is the place to open an outpost of some of the hottest restaurant chains in the DMV (and NYC). This stylish suburban Maryland neighborhood has historically not been known as a restaurant hotspot, thanks to many corporate chain options, but that reputation is steadily changing.

In 2020, celebrity chef and humanitarian José Andrés brought his New York comfort food destination, Spanish Diner, to Bethesda, and DC’s beloved Chinese-Korean fast food chain, Chiko, also landed in the neighborhood. . This year, there’s a lot of restaurant news about Bethesda’s buzzing new restaurants.

Here are 11 Bethesda restaurants and bars, new or slated to open in 2022, you need to know.

Popular New York taqueria Tacombi landed in the DMV this fall with the opening of an outpost in Arlington, right next to Amazon HQ2. It was the first of several area restaurants for Tacombi, and the next is a Bethesda location that will open the last week of May at 4749 Bethesda Ave.

Tacombi is known for its beer-battered Alaskan cod tacos wrapped in homemade corn and flour tortillas. Other popular dishes include quesadillas with thinly sliced ​​Mexican-style roast pork al pastor; sweet potato, kale and poblano burritos; and corn husks. Located around the corner from Bethesda Avenue, Tacombi’s second DMV restaurant spans 4,500 square feet and features an open kitchen where diners can watch the team’s taqueros at work. Views from the dining room also overlook the Capital Crescent trail and green space currently under development.

Tacombi’s Bethesda location will be open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., and take-out and delivery service will be available on its website and app.


A New York bakery and cafe with an Oprah-approved cookie is heading to Bethesda Row. The List Are You On It reports that Mom is set to open a Bethesda store in late spring/early summer, with DC locations planned in Georgetown and Union Market.

This New England seafood house from Long Shot Hospitality is taking over the suburbs. An offshoot of the Navy Yard original opened in Ballston in 2021, and a Bethesda location is coming soon. The plan is to open in the long empty space at 4900 Hampden Lane, with an opening scheduled for 2022.

Bistro Cubasi

A Cuban restaurant based in Sterling is going to make the leap from Virginia to Maryland. Bethesda magazine reports that Cubasi Bistro will open this month at 4710 Bethesda Avenue. The Sterling menu includes a roast pork sandwich, cod fishcakes, rice bowls, and Puerto Rican dishes like mofongo.

A New York-based Bethesda Mexicue location is set to open this month at 4733 Elm Street, according to Bethesda magazine. Mexicue brought its quirky blends of Mexican and Southern cuisine to DC in 2019 with a 14th Street outpost serving up bowls of burnt brisket and hot Nashville chicken tacos.

The virtual breakfast sandwich kitchen, Shaw’s HalfSmoke, has gotten its own physical location in Bethesda’s Montgomery Mall, located at 7101 Democracy Boulevard. Butter Me Up launched during the pandemic, serving over-the-top breakfast sandwiches with cheeky names like the “Staycation” with scrambled eggs, goat cheese, caramelized onions, avocado and mayonnaise to sriracha, all served on buttered brioche buns. The Bethesda outpost opened in early May and also serves juices, smoothies, toast, and coffee drinks.

Paris in town

A French bistro serving pancakes, quiches of the day, panini sandwiches and onion soup is now open in Bethesda starting in April. Located at 4903 Cordell Avenue, Paris in Town also exists in Florida in Palm Beach under the same owner, Bethesda magazine reports. The restaurant also includes a showcase with macaroons and desserts and a French book exchange wall.

The Maryland “crab” dip at Bethesda’s chic new plant-based restaurant, Planta, includes hearts of palm, creamy cashew mozzarella and Old Bay remoulade. The North American vegan chain’s Bethesda Row outpost opened in February in a space at 4910 Elm Street that’s outfitted in soothing wood tones and bright greens.


All-vegetarian taco purveyor Chaia has grown from a farmers market stall to now three brick-and-mortar locations: Georgetown, Chinatown and now Bethesda. Chaia opened at 7237 Woodmont Avenue in September 2021 with a one-year lease in hopes of possibly extending the contract. Order sweet potato nachos, rainbow carrot tacos, and kids’ meals (only one for Bethesda’s location).

The wait for a high-rise rooftop bar in Bethesda is over with this month’s opening of Hip Flask, which sits atop the new 12-story Marriott Bethesda Downtown at Marriott’s headquarters. This hotel bar at 7707 Woodmont Avenue is awash in nautical blues, with floor-to-ceiling windows and a terrace for admiring the Bethesda skyline. Order local Maryland beers, speakeasy-style cocktails served in flasks, and small bites like chili deviled eggs.

The growing local bagel store has chosen its new location at Pike & Rose in North Bethesda to launch its first dinner menu. Open September 2021 at 11807 Grand Park Avenue, the “Jewish” deli serves pizza bagels, pastrami brisket tacos and breakfast sandwiches starting at 4 p.m., while breakfast starts at 8 a.m. .

Hello Betty debuted in April, unveiling a colorful dining room decorated with beach blankets. The menu is also seaside, focusing on blue crabs mixed in Old Bay vinegar, table-assembled tacos, and orange mashes. A 40-foot boat parked on the terrace will serve as an outdoor bar this summer.
