CATCHES OF THE WEEK

Benjamin Armendariz of El Paso, Texas, caught a 17-inch, 2-pound rainbow trout at Grindstone Reservoir using PowerBait on Feb. 7.

Filiberto and Charlotte Snow Martinez, 7 and 4, from Albuquerque caught their rainbow trout limits in the Tingley Beach Youth Pond using Garlic PowerBait on Feb. 9.

Northeast Fishing Report

Ice fishing for brook trout at Cabresto Lake was good using small luminescent tungsten ice jigs with luminescent plastics. The roads were snowy and slippery.

Charette Lakes is closed for the season and will reopen in March.

The flow of the Cimarron River near Cimarron Monday morning was not measured due to ice.

Clayton Lake is closed for the season and will reopen in March.

Winter Season Hours at Lake Conchas: Open for day access only Thursday-Sunday 8am-5pm.

At Costilla Creek, the department implemented the final phase of a project to expand Rio Grande cutthroat trout 120 miles from the Costilla watershed in northern New Mexico. The final phase involved the removal of fish in a designated area (Rio Costilla from the Costilla Dam downstream to the limit of Valle Vidal, including all tributaries and Comanche Creek from the culvert crossing Forest Road 1950 downstream to ‘at its confluence with the Rio Costilla and all tributaries) with a temporary cutthroat restocking of the Rio Grande this spring. Nearby places to fish include Costilla Creek below the Fish Barrier, Upper Comanche Creek, Shuree Ponds, Middle Ponil Creek, Upper Powderhouse Creek, Little Costilla Creek, Vidal Creek, and McCrystal Creek. Please check the department’s website for more information on the project and to identify other angling opportunities in the meantime.

Ice fishing for trout at Eagle Nest Lake was slow to fair using PowerBait, Tungsten Ice Jigs, Swedish Pimple Worm Lures and Trout Magnet Pink Lures. Ice fishing for perch was fair using tungsten ice jigs, Swedish pimple worm tip lures, PowerBait and Trout Magnet lures. Trout fishing at Eagle Rock Lake was fair to good using pink PowerBait and small worm tip jigs.

Gallinas River received no reports from anglers this week.

Anglers have reported that Lake Hopewell is frozen and the entrance gates are locked until spring. Trout ice fishing was very good using orange PowerBait and night worms.

The Los Pinos River received no reports from anglers this week.

Maxwell Lake 13 is closed for the season and will reopen in March.

Monastery Lake is closed to fishing due to dangerous ice conditions. It will reopen when there are enough open water areas available to allow fishing from the shore.

Flow in the Pecos River near the town of Pecos Monday morning was not measured due to ice. Trout fishing was fair to good with Panther Martin black and yellow spinners near Villanueva.

The flow of the Red River below the hatchery on Monday morning was not measured due to ice. Trout fishing was fair using zebra flies and RS2 flies.

On Monday morning, the flow of the Rio Grande at the Taos Junction Bridge was 405 cubic feet per second (cfs). Trout fishing was good with copper spoons.

The flow of the Rio Hondo Monday morning near Valdez was not measured due to ice.

The flow of the Rio Mora Monday morning near Tererro was not measured due to ice.

Flow from the Rio Pueblo near Peñasco Monday morning was not measured due to ice.

Santa Cruz Reservoir received no reports from anglers this week.

Northwest Fishing Report

Lake Abiquiú received no reports from fishermen this week.

Water flow on the Animas River below Aztec Monday morning was 198 cfs.

Trout fishing in Albuquerque area drains was fair to good using homemade worms and paste baits.

Bluewater Lake received no reports from anglers this week.

Brazos River received no reports from anglers this week.

Canjilon Lakes received no reports from anglers this week.

Monday morning flows on the Chama River downstream of El Vado and Abiquiú were 97.3 cfs and 58.3 cfs respectively. Trout fishing under Lake El Vado was fair to good using night worms and PowerBaits. Trout fishing under Lake Abiquiú was fair using pearl-headed nymphs. Remember that from the bridge crossing the river on US Highway 84 at Abiquiú upstream 7 miles to the base of the Abiquiú Dam, there are special trout waters with a bag limit of two trout only.

Cochiti Lake received no reports from anglers this week.

Lake El Vado is closed to ice fishing due to the thin layer of ice that covers the lake.

There was no fishing due to thin ice covering Fenton Lake. Remember that only two cutthroat trout are allowed to be harvested per day against the regular five fish limit.

Heron Lake is open to ice fishing, anglers are advised to exercise caution due to irregular ice conditions. Trout fishing was fair to good using ice fishing jigs, spoons and salmon roe.

At Jemez Waters, the flow on the Jemez near the village of Jemez Springs Monday morning was 17.6 cfs. Trout fishing was fair to good using worms and salmon roe.

Laguna del Campo is closed for the season and will reopen in May.

Lagunitas Lakes received no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Farmington received no reports from anglers this week.

Due to extremely low water levels and unstable ground conditions, stocking efforts have been suspended at McGaffey Lake. Lake conditions will be monitored and stockings will resume once conditions improve.

Navajo Lake received no reports from anglers this week.

Rio Grande received no reports from anglers this week.

Lake San Gregorio received no reports from anglers this week.

The flow of the San Juan River Monday morning was 338 cfs. Trout fishing in the quality waters was fair to good using leech flies, leech flies and black fly flies. Trout fishing in bait waters was fair to good using night worms.

Seven Springs Brood Pond received no reports from anglers this week. Parking is limited and 4×4 vehicles are recommended due to snow.

Trout fishing at Tingley Beach was fair to good with PowerBait Garlic and PowerBait Chartreuse.

Southwest Fishing Report

Trout fishing at Alumni Pond was slow to fair using Cheese PowerBait, Nymph Flavored PowerBait, and Corn PowerBait.

Trout fishing at Bear Canyon Lake was good using salmon fishing PowerBait and salmon roe.

Trout fishing at Lake Bill Evans was fair to good using pink PowerBaits, Rapala lures, streamer flies and brown and green Roboworms.

Catfish fishing at Elephant Butte Lake was fair to good using cut gizzard shad bait and live bait. Fishing for white bass was slow to fair using live bait. Largemouth bass fishing was just using hanging lures.

The flow of the Gila River on Monday morning was 57.3 cfs.

Glenwood Pond received no reports from anglers this week.

Trout fishing at Percha Dam was fair to good with yellow and orange PowerBaits.

On Monday morning, the flow of the Rio Grande below Elephant Butte was 0.17 cfs.
