Here are our favorite Thanksgiving dishes


Just before the end of the semester, we take a break for a brief intermission at home to spend a peaceful week surrounded by loved ones. When it comes to Thanksgiving, it’s time to rejoice with hometown friends, watch holiday movies, and, yes, bask in all the food comas.

Thanksgiving looks different to everyone. But, when it comes to food, it’s the tasty dishes that we create memories and share with laughter. While it’s great to see Aunt Susan again after another year, it’s the mashed potatoes that we really have on our minds. Here are some of our favorite Thanksgiving meals that we look forward to:

1. Mashed potatoes

Nothing better than walking into the kitchen on Thanksgiving Day and seeing a bowl full of mashed potatoes on the counter. In pieces or smooth, with or without skin, mashed potatoes accompany the whole meal. You can mix them with your veggies, turkey, and gravy for the ultimate Thanksgiving experience. Mashed potatoes are also a perfect leftover, if there is any left over. Caroline kammerer

2. Green beans

Hoping to have some green veggies for the huge meal, green beans are the perfect Thanksgiving accompaniment. While stuffing your face all day, these make you feel a little better about the feast. Green beans, cut or not, tied with onions and even ham or bacon, remind you of what home-cooked meals are like. – Kendall Wright

3. Butter rolls

A must-have classic at Thanksgiving, buttered buns can make anyone feel warm and comforting. The best part is that they are a great side dish to snack on before a meal, and they also complement the main course dinner. It’s the perfect food to keep you feeling toasty and homey when celebrating with your family over the holidays, and you can never go wrong with fluffy, buttery carbs. -Mimi Calhoun

4. Mac and cheese

A Thanksgiving classic, my mom’s special recipe for mac and cheese always has that homey feeling that I can’t get anywhere else. It’s the perfect balance between a good side dish and the main course. This is something you will never get tired of and screams unity throughout the vacation. – Guillaume Troyer

5. Baked carrot / beetroot accompaniment

My family is Scottish so when I party with my dad we usually have that. It’s pretty much carrots and radishes mashed together, but it’s super sweet and you can’t hit it until you’ve tried it. I love when my grandmother does this because it brings me closer to my Scottish roots. Grace Koenneke

6. Corn casserole

It’s an underrated dish that I always look forward to eating every holiday season. I admit it doesn’t sound so appetizing since it’s basically cornbread, corn and cream. Although it’s a very simple dish, my dad and I still fight over leftovers year after year. The fights make the dish much more appreciated in my heart. Logan Humphrey

7. Purple sweet potato pie

Obviously, being vegan at Thanksgiving has more lows than highs when it comes to the dinner table. This usually means that my great aunt asks me if I ‘always do this vegan thing’, how she ever could because she ‘just can’t live without cheese’, having a smaller plate than everyone else on. because of the lack of options and never being able to relate to the feeling of food coma. To say the least, it’s not my favorite vacation. However, when it comes to this dish, it’s my only silver lining and the thing I look forward to the most when it comes to Thanksgiving. My mom decided to make this fun pumpkin pie alternative three years ago, and it’s been a staple on our table ever since. Dessert comes with a crust of dates and raw almonds, mashed purple sweet potatoes and a vegan whipped cream on top.
