What is a pizza without a base? A kulhad pizza or cup of earth!

A restaurant by the name of “The Cone Chaat” in the Indian state of Gujarat, in western India, serves pizzas of this style – a gluten-free idea! Since then, the trend has gone viral, with people lining up to try this cheese dish in a clay mug.

A kulhad is like a clay cup. In India, tea, coffee, and kulfi (Indian frozen dessert) are usually served in a kulhad. However, a pizza is the first of its kind.

According to social media videos, the preparation of kulhad pizza begins with adding boiled corn in a bowl, tomatoes, paneer (cottage cheese), bread cut into cubes, tomato ketchup, mayonnaise, sauces. restaurant signature, chilli flakes, Indian chaat masala and oregano, all mixed and added to the kulhad until half full. Then a layer of mozzarella cheese with boiled corn is added and baked.

With over 2 million views on YouTube, this video shows how the dish can be made at home with minimal effort. Nonetheless, that goes beyond the question – how is it pizza without a base? Something people have also asked for.

YouTube user William Primo commented on the video: “How’s pizza without dough? I mean if it’s pizza then anything or everything is pizza.”

Another user, Shimna Chandran, commented: “It’s not pizza, it’s potzza.”

While the trend has sparked much debate and appreciation, it’s the effort to create something unique by the restaurant that gets people talking. It might not be pizza, but it sure can be a quick meal in a cup – Indian style!

Here’s a quick recipe for trying this salty one-cup snack at home:

1 cup cubed bread (white bread)

½ cup seeded tomatoes, diced

½ teaspoon of chaat masala powder (create at home with equal amounts of toasted cumin powder, black salt and dried mango powder)

1 cup grated mozzarella cheese

1 garlic clove, chopped

1 teaspoon oregano or as needed

1 tablespoon crumbled paneer or cottage cheese

1 sprig of coriander to garnish


1. In a bowl, add the boiled corn, onion, tomatoes, paneer, if using.

2. Then add the cheese and sauces.

3. Add the chaat masala powder, pepper flakes and oregano, mix well.

4. Take a kulhad or a cup, fill it halfway with this mixture and cover it with mozzarella.

5. Layer the remaining half with the mixture and top with sweetcorn, mayonnaise and ketchup.

6. Bake for 2 minutes at 180C.
