Following a surprise elimination challenge that caused the cooks to carefully use a limited time to deliver their dishes, Chef Contestant Jenn Lee was unfortunately eliminated from the competition. Leaving the show, however, Jenn Lee was kind enough to share with us her favorite quick and easy recipe for MasterChef at Home: Korean Soy Braised Potatoes or Gamja Jorim.

Lee explained via email that “This delicious potato dish is a traditional Korean banchan (side dish) and is so tasty you won’t stop eating it. It’s super quick to make and [has] almost no cleanup as it is cooked in one pan!” Sounds like a dream, if you ask us.

Here’s how to make Lee’s (Gamja Jorim) Korean Soy Braised Potatoes for yourself at home.

Cooking time: 30 mins

What you will need to make Soy Braised Potatoes:

  • 1/2 kg baby potatoes
  • 1 brown onion
  • 3 cloves of garlic
  • 4 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon honey or corn syrup
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon toasted sesame seeds
  • 1/2 cup of water
  • 1/2 tablespoon oil

Equipment

  • a saucepan or skillet
  • knife and cutting board
  • microwave and stove

Instructions for Soy Braised Potatoes:

  1. Pierce the baby potatoes with a fork, if they are too large, cut them in half. Microwave in a heatproof bowl for 6 minutes.
  2. Coarsely chop the onions and mince the garlic.
  3. Heat 1/2 tablespoon oil in a saucepan or skillet.
  4. Add the potatoes and brown them gently over medium-high heat. Add onions and garlic. Sauté for 5 minutes until everything is golden brown and gently caramelized.
  5. Add the water, soy sauce and honey (or corn syrup) and simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  6. After 15-20 minutes the sauce should have reduced and the potatoes cooked through, increase the heat and add the sesame oil and sesame seeds. Stir to combine and remove from heat. You can enjoy it right away or place it in the fridge and have it as a delicious cold side dish.
