MiceChat – Epcot, Features, Walt Disney World – Popcorn Around the World

Are you a popcorn lover? Maybe you are like our grandfather and drink a little each day to snack and enjoy. One of the things my family always likes to do is “try all things out” and compare them to see which are our favorites. Today we’re at Epcot and we’re going to sample all the different freshly popped popcorn in the park!

Unfortunately, it’s not like the Japanese Disney parks with a dozen different flavors of popcorn. Here, there are only three different flavors of popcorn. Let’s collect them!

Butter popcorn can be found in many places, all around the Disney parks. This popcorn stand, which is actually called “Popcorn Stand” near the entrance to the World Showcase at Epcot, has our favorite. Because it’s front and center, they’re constantly popping corn so it’s always fresh. They must also mix their ingredients a little differently as we find the popcorn here to be more yellow, flavorful and buttery. If we are going to compare it to other types of popcorn, we might as well get the best. A regular container of popcorn costs $5.50, but a refill of popcorn (as long as you have a souvenir bucket) costs $2.25.

Our next stop for our first flavored popcorn is at the Canada Pavilion. Canada, known for its maple leaves and maple syrup production, has a popcorn stand showcasing…Maple Popcorn. You didn’t expect that, did you?

To achieve that signature maple flavor, popcorn kernels are mixed with maple cotton candy sugar.

And there’s quite a bit of maple popcorn that’s been pre-made. A container of maple popcorn costs $6.50, but if you have a souvenir bucket, you can always get a refill for $2.25.

Our last stop is the Karamell-Küche kitchen in the Germany pavilion with artisanal caramel treats.

This popcorn maker is a workhorse! I rarely see it unused during our visit. There are large bins stacked with popped kernels, waiting their turn to be caramelized.

Speaking of which, it’s something I don’t see often. I always see the workers bring the popped kernels into the back room and then come out with caramel popcorn to be bagged. This is the first time I’ve seen this mixing machine in use, ensuring that each core gets an even coating.

After the popcorn has cooled, a cast member fills the bags and adds a sticker to keep it sealed. I had wondered how they did all this without a scale. Did they look at it and just fill it in with what they thought looked good?

It turns out that on each bag there are lines printed at the correctly filled height. A cast member just has to make sure the popcorn reaches that line, and then it’s all set.

Look at all that popcorn waiting to be sold. It is a very popular treat. When we were in line, the person in front of us and the person behind us both ordered bags. On previous visits I have heard people order multiple bags to take home for friends and family.

Karamell-Küche Werther’s Original Caramel Corn is $6.99 per bag. There are no cheaper “refills” here, although there is a 20% discount for annual pass holders.

Now that we’ve collected all the popcorn, let’s get to tasting it!

Here are our three popcorns. Maple Popcorn from Canada, Caramel Popcorn from Germany and Butter Popcorn from World Showcase.

The first is maple popcorn. I’ve tried this many times before, and honestly, I want to like it, but it never meets my expectations. I love the taste of maple – real maple syrup, maple donuts, maple sugar candies and all of these are some of my favorite treats – unfortunately I can’t find any hint in this popcorn. It’s candy coated, yes, and I get a toasted/burnt sugar flavor but no maple. It is sad.

Next, we’ll try Werther’s Original Caramel Popcorn from the Karamell-Küche in the German Pavilion.

This popcorn has a sweet buttery flavor. There is a slight caramel flavor, but it’s not overpowering. The popcorn also has a little chewiness, which means they bring the temperature of the caramel to the bottom of the “hard crack” stage. It’s tasty to be sure. I understand why it’s so popular.

For our latest popcorn, we found the butteriest, yellowest popcorn possible. There’s a reason it’s so popular and sold out everywhere. This is delicious! It is salty and has a lot of buttery flavor.

Now is the time to vote! With four people tasting, will there be a unanimous winner?
Nope! Everyone has different tastes, so there is no popcorn that suits everyone.

My son Ian likes sweetness and candy, but not in his popcorn. Her favorite is Butter Popcorn. Every time we pass a popcorn stand, if it pops fresh and comes out buttery yellow, he wants some. He is like his grandfather like that.

For the rest of us, Werther’s Original Popcorn is the winner. It’s good!

It was a fun taste test! We love trying out all the different things around Disney!

Just for fun, we also compared all of these popcorns to a Homemade Caramel Corn with the Kids, based on MiceChat writer Donna Collins’ recipe for Karamel Küche popcorn. Our homemade caramel popcorn was preferred by Ian, Alli and myself, with Theresa being the only person who still preferred popcorn from Germany.

The following. Popcorn must be the bane of custodial staff everywhere.

We cleaned it ourselves as best we could.
