May 21 – A convoy of motorcycles will roll down Interstate 20 in Meridian on Monday toward the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington for Memorial Day.

The riders began their journey in California on three routes across America. Meridian is one stop on the Southern Route, while others are the Central and Midway routes.

The advance party will hold a wreath laying ceremony at the Doughboy Monument around 4:15 p.m. before joining the main body of about 400 motorcycles heading to the Lauderdale County Agri-Center on the highway. 19

Patrick Kirby, director of the local Veterans Appreciation Committee, said the main body is expected to arrive in Meridian around 4:45 p.m.

“Those who want to see the runners go can go to any safe overpass over I-20, Kirby said. “Please help us support these runners by getting to the overpasses of Lauderdale County.

“Come volunteer to support these runners and show that Meridian cares about its military personnel.”

Kirby says Meridian is the runners’ favorite and most beloved stop.

“What they love about Meridian is that they’ll get a hot meal — something they won’t get anywhere else on their commute,” Kirby said. “Breast and chicken with baked potatoes, corn, green beans, salad and a bun, plus juices, tea, coffee and lots of homemade desserts. We wash also their clothes all night long, so that they will be nice and clean for the next morning.”

Before leaving the next morning, the runners will have a breakfast offered by local restaurants.

“They’ll have a selection of juices, cookies, breakfast burritos and fruit to take with them,” Kirby said. “We also provide some gas money. The Meridian Police Department will take them to Alabama where they will be met by Alabama police before heading to their destination.”

The Meridian Veteran Appreciation Committee has supported the event for over 10 years. The event honors the lives of those soldiers who were lost or killed during the Vietnam War and other wars.
