This Butter and Garlic Goli Idli Recipe from Chef Kunal Kapur is Delicious


Idli, a popular South Indian breakfast, is usually served with sambar or coconut. The fluffy delight is made from a special rice batter. Udupi, Chettinad, Kanchipuram, Rava, Thatte, Ramessari and Moode are some popular variants of Idlis enjoyed in the South. While you might think preparing a delicious Idli platter is a tedious task, Chef Kunal Kapoor has your back. In an Instagram post, the chef shared the recipe for making lip-smacking buttery garlic goli idlis. All you need are a few ingredients and some rice balls. Along with the recipe, Chef Kunal Kapoor wrote, “Idli Garlic Butter is simple to make, uses very few ingredients, and can be enjoyed any time of the day. Enjoy cooking.”

Here is the full recipe for Goli Idli Garlic Butter by Chef Kunal Kapur:


  • Butter – 2 tbsp
  • Garlic (chopped) – 1 tsp
  • Green chilli (chopped) – 1/2 tsp
  • Onions (chopped) – 3 tbsp
  • Corn niblet – a handful
  • Lemon
  • spring onion


Step 1: Heat a frying pan on the stove. Drop some butter, once it melts, add chopped garlic and green chilli.

Step 2: Mix, and add the chopped onions and a few corn kernels. Brown the ingredients well.

Step 3: Add a pinch of lemon and stir in the rice balls. Mix it well, so that the mixture of vegetables and the flavor are induced in the Idli.

Step 4: Garnish the dish with some spring onions and it’s good to serve.

In case you have trouble making rice balls or goli idli, don’t worry. Just follow these steps:

Step 1: Boil water in a pot, now add salt and ghee. Empty a little rice flour and keep the utensil aside. Let the water soak in.

Step 2: Once the mixture has cooled down a bit, make a soft dough. You can add hot water if needed.

Step 3: Make small balls with the rice dough. And steam them for 10-15 minutes.
