Try Korean Corn Dogs at San Antonio’s New Mochinut

International chain Mochinut, which established its first location in San Antonio in the summer of 2021, opened a Stone Oak location earlier this week on Saturday, January 8. In October, the donut shop began serving a small batch of eclectically dressed Korean corn dogs. .

When I first heard the news of the new Mochinut opening, I realized that I had managed to refrain from the Korean corn dog trend despite their growing popularity in the county metro area. from Bexar. I like to stay reasonably informed, so something had to give. With stories of mermaid-like Flamin’ Hot Cheeto crusted dogs swirling around in my head, I took the opportunity to visit the new suburban snack stop and try Korean dogs for the first time.

What is a Korean Corndog?

Outside of Mochinut, local pop-ups like Sjang have helped put Korean corn dogs on people’s radar in San Antonio. On social media and in various outposts around the world, they have gained new culinary notoriety over the past year.

A December 2021 Bon Appetit magazine article, “It Was the Year of the Korean Corn Dog” differentiates the common “state fair” style corn dog from the Korean variety by noting the latter’s indulgent ingredients. Your standard corn dog is simple — a dog dipped in batter — but a Korean corn dog starts with a core of meat or mozzarella (sometimes both). It is then beaten and decorated with any number of fried toppings. At Mochinut, customers can choose to top their cheese dogs with flaming hot Cheetos, fried potatoes, cheddar cheese, or crispy ramen. If you feel so inclined, you can also order a no-frills “original”.

Like many suburban gems, you can find San Antonio’s second Mochinut location in a strip mall next to a vape store. I arrived at the counter with a feeling of uncertainty. Did I even like corn dogs? While perusing the menu, I was distracted by a colorful case of sweets. Stressed with the burden of choice, I ordered a Thai milk tea to ease my mind. It came in a thin plastic cup with a pastel straw. I finally settled on Original Mozzarella Corn Dogs and Hot Cheeto. Before I sat down, I eyed the six different types of donuts in the donut box once more. The tiny fried crowns flavored with churros, chocolate, lychee, coffee, peach and honeydew were waiting to be claimed like puppies from the pet store. The girl behind the counter asked me if I wanted to take home half a dozen – one of each kind. After driving all this way, this was an offer I just couldn’t refuse.

Donut box in one hand, syrupy tea in the other, I waited patiently for my crispy dogs. A bell rang and a young couple in their late teens walked in, probably on a similar journey, except it was entirely more romantic considering I had brought my mom. I could imagine many more young couples braving the traffic of Stone Oak to sit at one of the small tables and treat themselves.

Mochinut is probably the perfect place for a casual date.

Finally my dogs arrived – bright chili red and soft golden brown in color and with an attractive textural situation. I tasted both and immediately remembered that I really don’t like corn dogs. This is an important detail because despite my general anti-corn dog philosophy, I was surprised to appreciate the crunchy flavor of Korean corn dogs. Finally, I had successfully participated in the trend.

Each dog is affordable and sells for $3-5. Compensating for the heaviness of the corn dogs, the donuts were very light and aesthetically pleasing. If you like trying new things or are looking for a cute place to hang out with a date or a boyfriend (or in my case, a mom), then head to Mochinut next to the vape shop at 19202 Stone Oak Parkway.
