Worst Cookie for Belly Fat, Says Dietitian – Eat This, Not That


Cookies can be a delicious sweet treat. Whether freshly baked or prepackaged, they are always a delight to eat and usually bursting with flavor. There are also many types of cookies to choose from; from classics like chocolate chips to more unique flavors like strawberry shortcake. And it may surprise you, but there are even healthy cookies that can help you lose weight without losing taste.

Although it sounds too good to be true, there are still cookies that can lead to weight gain, especially belly fat. According to Lisa Young, Ph.D., RDN, author of Finally Full, Finally Thin, and a member of our Medical Expert Council, one of the worst cookies to eat that can cause belly fat are sandwich cookies.

“They’re ultra-processed and full of unhealthy ingredients,” says Young.

Have you ever wondered why these cookies can last so long in your pantry without spoiling? That’s because they’re loaded with tons of added sugar, sugar that food manufacturers add to products to boost flavor or extend shelf life.

A standard prepackaged sandwich cookie includes two wafers with some sort of filling in between. Wafers can be in different flavors or made from different ingredients. The filling can also be of different types, including cream, Jamganache or lemon cream.

Although these cookies sound like dessert heaven, they are all made from highly processed ingredients. These cookies, if consumed regularly, can lead to many problems with your body. Some of these issues include the development wrinkles, Type 2 diabetesand of course, weight gain.

“Without realizing it, you’re getting extra calories, added sugar, and fat in these types of cookies. And the ‘topping’ gives you an extra dose of corn syrup and artificial ingredients,” says Young.

In research by princeton universitywe discovered that high fructose corn syrup cause much more weight than those who have access to table sugar. The study also showed that long-term consumption of high fructose corn syrup also leads to an abnormal increase in body fat, especially in the abdomen..

According to Harvard School of Health Medicineas well as high fructose corn syrup, other added sugars to look for on the ingredient label are brown sugar, corn sweetener, corn syrup, fruit juice concentrates, honey, invert sugar, malt sugar, molasses and syrup sugar molecules ending in “ose” (dextrose, fructose, glucose, lactose, maltose, sucrose ).

Since most sandwich cookies contain high fructose corn syrup, or other processed sugars, it’s best to stay away from fake ultra-processed sugars. So what is the alternative to artificial cookies?

“Want a cookie once in a while? Choose a homemade version of your favorite kind and practice portion control,” says Young.
